Top 10 Tips On Planning Affordable Honeymoons

by Alicia Cooke

Honeymoons are often the most memorable trip in one’s life, though anyone with limited funds knows that trying to plan such a journey on a budget can be difficult. There are ways to spend less on a honeymoon trip without compromising the nature of the journey. A willingness to consider alternatives can produce significant savings and also provide a sense of adventure to the voyage. What follows is a collection of 10 ideas to help plan affordable honeymoons:

1. Choose an off-peak season to travel to your destination. This can save you as much as 50% on all aspects of your trip, depending on your destination. For instance, you can travel to many Caribbean destinations during the summer for discounted prices.

2. As soon as you know where you want to go, get your air travel booking in as quickly as possible. If you wait to book your flight until 30 days or less of your planned departure date, most airlines are going to charge you a penalty. If at all possible, the best way to save money on airfare is to use a frequent flyer account and a credit card for that airline. The most recent trip my wife and I took was to Italy, and we used our frequent flyer miles to go. During the month, we will use our United Airline credit card to pay for things, and by the time we need to get away, we’ll have accumulated enough miles to go where we want to.

3. Just like with airfare, reserve your hotel accommodations in advance as well. Particularly during off-season months, rates can be negotiable. For a little more adventure and less cost as well, stay at a bed and breakfast or try renting an apartment from one of the locals.

4. Decide on the tourist sights in which you are interested and make an effort to choose accommodations centrally located and within a short distance to the locations you most wish to see. Being able to secure accommodations near your priority tourist destinations is a great way to reduce expenses that otherwise might have gone to cab rides. Therefore, you can make the most of your vacation time by cutting down on travel time between points of interest.

5. Taking your meals where the local inhabitants eat likely means you are sampling truly authentic cuisine at reduced cost. Dining on American foods away from the States is excessively pricey and likely less appealing than trying the local fare that costs far less.

6. Perhaps one of the most important rules of planning affordable honeymoons involves being aware of exchange rates with regard to different currencies; moreover, know where to get the best exchanges as well (ATMs often have great exchange rates). Merchants know these rates all too well and will offer you prices in local and US currency that will never be in your favor if you let them.

7. The best money to use when you are overseas is the credit card for several reasons: you won’t have to worry so much about pickpockets, you will usually receive a good exchange rate on things you buy, you will have to worry less about carrying local currency, and you will have a nice way to show everywhere you went.

8. Shopping, of course is one of the most fun things to do on any honeymoon, but knowing what to shop for is the key. Have a game plan as to the people you want to shop for and what items are best from the locale that you are visiting. This will cut down on useless, tacky gifts that will either collect dust or just end up being “re-gifted”.

9. Travel light. Regardless of where you go or how long you will be there, you never really need as much as you pack. Besides, odds are you will likely buy some clothing mementos on your trip as well. Often, you’ll find great deals on extraordinary hand-made clothing and crafts from the local vendors.

10. Public transportation is cheap, efficient, and always an adventure (and a safe one at that) in most places outside of the United States. It is also a great way to see and experience local life.

I hope this list of tips has been helpful. As you can see, planning affordable honeymoons can be a really fun process. More importantly, the more you plan right now, the more you can relax and have a good time on your actual trip.
